How I Used Novel Mage’s AI Agent Chat to Edit My Novel And How You Can Too

If you’ve ever stared at your half-finished manuscript wondering “Where exactly did this go off the rails?”, then I’ve got something cool to share with you.

We just rolled out a powerful new feature inside Novel Mage called Agent Chat and after putting it through its paces with my own novel, I can confidently say: this is going to change the way a lot of indie authors and AI-assisted writers edit and develop their stories.

This blog is both a step-by-step walkthrough and a real-world breakdown of how you can use Agent Chat to analyze your novel, improve your structure, and tighten your writing all without waiting weeks for critique circle feedback (you know exactly what I’m talking about).

🧠 So... What Is Agent Chat?

Agent Chat is your smart writing assistant, fully integrated into Novel Mage. Think of it as a creative partner that can:

  • Analyze your manuscript
  • Give targeted, chapter-specific feedback
  • Break down character arcs, plot pacing, themes, and tone
  • Suggest line-level improvements
  • Help you debug messy plot threads or flat scenes

Basically, it’s like having a highly trained editor who actually has time to read your work instantly.

💡 What Can You Ask Agent Chat?

Here’s just a taste of what you can do:

  • Ask your Agent: “Which of my characters have unresolved arcs?”
  • Say: “Summarize Chapter 5 from the antagonist’s POV.”
  • Ask: “What’s the timeline of events between Scene 3 and Scene 7?”
  • Or even: “Does the villain’s motivation contradict what he says in Chapter 2?”
  • It can also make Codex entries for you.

Your Agent can automatically look into your scenes, chapters, codex entries when needed and it’s always ready to help you stay consistent, catch logic gaps, or brainstorm like a co-author who actually reads your book.

No setup needed. Just open the Agent Chat and start talking.

🚀 How to Access Agent Chat in Novel Mage

If you're already using Novel Mage to write your story, you’re just a few clicks away:

  1. Open your Project: From My Novels, select the novel you're working on.

  2. Connect to OpenRouter: You’ll find it in the top navigation bar under the AI tab.

  3. Go to the Chat Tab: Click on the Chat tab from the left sidebar.

  4. Start a New Agent Chat: Click + Add Agent to begin a conversation with your AI assistant.

  5. Select Your Model: Use the settings icon to choose from top models like Claude or Deepseek for best results.

  6. Ask a Question: Type your own prompt like “What are the pacing issues in my last 5 chapters?”

  7. Sit Back and Let It Read: The AI will fetch your content and reply with feedback — no uploads, no copy-pasting.

🧪 Real Examples From My Own Novel

To test the limits, I threw a bunch of high-level editorial questions at Agent Chat. Here’s how it performed:

1. “What are the weak spots in my novel so far?”

Agent Chat didn’t just give me a generic answer it identified that my pacing dipped during Chapters 7–9 and that two side characters served nearly identical narrative roles. It even suggested combining them or changing their goals to add contrast. Solid catch.

2. “Which themes are emerging in my story, and are they consistent?”

It picked up on a recurring theme of "freedom vs. responsibility" I hadn’t consciously emphasized, then pointed out which scenes supported it and which didn’t.

3. “Is my protagonist’s arc emotionally satisfying?”

This was gold. It broke the arc into five emotional beats and flagged a flat turning point in Act 2 that needed a stronger internal conflict. That one comment helped me rethink an entire chapter.

4. “Compare my narration and dialogue does one feel stronger?”

Turns out my narration was tight, but dialogue in certain chapters felt too expository. Agent Chat suggested trimming 10–15% of dialogue or breaking it up with body language and interruptions.

This is the kind of nuanced feedback you usually only get from a well-read critique partner… if you’re lucky.

✍ How Agent Chat Fits Into the Writing Process

Here’s where it really shines it’s not just for editing. You can plug it in at almost any point of the novel-writing journey:

StageUse Agent Chat to…
✏ PlanningBrainstorm plots, generate character arcs, test themes
🔧 DraftingClarify worldbuilding, explore emotional beats, fact-check details
🧹 RevisingSpot plot holes, tighten prose, balance scenes
📣 Publishing PrepCraft blurbs, suggest taglines, build query pitches

If you're ever stuck asking “Why isn’t this scene working?” this tool gets you back on track without killing momentum.

💬 Bonus Prompts You Can Try

Want to put it to work? Here are a few good ones:

  • “Which chapters slow down the pacing and how can I fix them?”
  • “Which characters feel underdeveloped or repetitive?”
  • “Summarize my story’s emotional arc so far.”
  • “What are some ways to add tension without adding new subplots?”

Each one gives you a different lens on your story and helps you sharpen what matters most.

📌 Final Thoughts: It’s Still Your Story

Let’s be clear Agent Chat isn’t here to write your book for you. It’s a mirror that shows you what’s working and what isn’t, with enough insight to help you make the right call. You’re still the author, editor, and creative director.

But having this tool on hand means you can move faster, make smarter revisions, and most importantly stay excited about your story.

And if you've ever been stuck waiting weeks for feedback, only to get "Looks good!" and no actual help… you'll appreciate this even more.

🔗 Ready to Try It?

If you’ve got a project open in Novel Mage , Agent Chat is already waiting. Just head to the sidebar and start a conversation.

You’ll be surprised what your novel has to say when it finally gets a voice.
