Continuity Check

Scan your finished manuscript for contradictions, timeline slips, and details that drift between chapters.

Continuity Check reads your finished chapters back against each other and flags the kind of error a human editor catches on a second pass but a first-draft brain never does: a scar that moved from one hand to the other, a character in two places at once, an object destroyed in chapter 8 that reappears intact in chapter 12.

It works because Novel Mage already tracks your Codex and chapter summaries as structured context. Continuity Check compares what each chapter states against what earlier chapters and Codex entries already established, and surfaces the mismatch with the specific chapters involved, so you can jump straight to the fix instead of re-reading the whole manuscript hunting for it.

Run it on a single chapter after a revision, or on the full manuscript before you send it to beta readers or an editor. Each flag is a suggestion, not an autocorrect nothing is changed without you reviewing it, and you can dismiss a flag if it's a deliberate retcon rather than a mistake.

Key benefits

  • Catches contradictions in physical details, timelines, and object states across chapters
  • Cross-references your Codex, not just the raw text, so it flags drift from established facts too
  • Points to the exact chapters in conflict instead of a vague warning
  • Runs on a single chapter or the whole manuscript, on demand
  • Every flag is reviewable and dismissible you decide what's actually a mistake

How it works

Open Review from the writing toolbar and select Continuity Check. Novel Mage reads through your chapters and Codex entries and returns a list of flagged inconsistencies, each tagged by type (physical, timeline, object, relationship) with the chapters involved. Click a flag to jump directly to the passage, fix it, and re-run the check to confirm it's clear.

When to use it

1.

A pre-submission pass before sending a manuscript to beta readers or an editor

2.

Catching drift in a novel written over months, where early chapters fade from memory

3.

Verifying a late structural edit (reordering chapters, cutting a scene) didn't break anything downstream

4.

Checking a long series for contradictions between books, not just within one
