Novel Mage Feature

Summaries

Instant act, chapter, and scene summaries.

Novel Mage's Summaries feature automatically generates structured summaries of your acts, chapters, and scenes on demand. These summaries serve double duty: they give you a readable overview of your story structure at any point in the draft, and they feed directly into Novel Mage's AI context system so every generation and chat request benefits from a compressed understanding of your full story, not just the last few paragraphs.

Long-form writing has a specific context problem: by Chapter 15, the AI can't hold Chapter 1 in its working memory. Summaries solve this. Novel Mage maintains a hierarchy of summaries scene summaries roll up into chapter summaries, which roll up into act summaries and injects the appropriate level into every AI call. The AI generating prose in Chapter 15 knows what happened in Chapter 1 not by reading all 50,000 words, but by reading the structured summary of it. This keeps your story consistent at scale.

Summaries are editable. The AI generates a first draft of each summary, and you can refine it to capture exactly what matters plot points, character state changes, emotional beats, or foreshadowing details you want the AI to track. Think of them as a production bible that doubles as AI context. The more accurately your summaries reflect your story, the more coherent your AI-assisted writing becomes in later chapters.

Key benefits

  • Instant summaries of scenes, chapters, and acts generated from your actual content
  • Feeds directly into Novel Mage's AI context, keeping generation consistent across the full manuscript
  • Solves the long-document context problem AI knows your whole story, not just the last few pages
  • Editable tune summaries to capture exactly the details that matter for future chapters
  • Track character state, plot developments, and foreshadowing across the manuscript

How it works

From any chapter or scene, trigger 'Generate Summary' from the context menu. Novel Mage reads the full content of the selection and produces a structured summary in a sidebar panel. Edit it to add, remove, or emphasize any details. Save it and it becomes part of the chapter's stored context. When you later generate prose in a different chapter, Novel Mage automatically pulls the relevant summaries as background context you don't have to manage this manually.

When to use it

1.

Keeping track of a complex novel with multiple POVs, timelines, or subplots

2.

Returning to a project after a break and needing to rebuild awareness of what you've written

3.

Ensuring later AI-assisted chapters stay consistent with earlier human-written ones

4.

Creating a structured synopsis for querying agents or planning a sequel
