Novel Mage Feature
Expand · Shorten · Rewrite
Targeted editing actions that preserve tone and intent.
Novel Mage's editing tools give you three targeted operations on any selected passage: Expand, Shorten, and Rewrite. Each operates on your selection in isolation without requiring you to set up context manually because Novel Mage has your chapter and codex context already loaded.
Expand takes a passage and adds depth: more sensory detail, emotional interiority, pacing, or scene development depending on what the passage calls for. It's useful when you've written a scene in skeleton form and need to bring it to life, or when feedback tells you a section feels 'thin' or 'rushed.' Shorten does the opposite it tightens prose, cuts redundancy, and improves pace without losing the scene's meaning. Use it when a chapter drags or when you've over-written an action sequence. Rewrite preserves the scene's intent but reconceives the phrasing different word choices, different rhythm, same story beat. Useful when a passage is technically correct but doesn't sing.
All three operations respect your Writer's Voice preset and system prompt if active. The AI doesn't rewrite your prose in its own voice it rewrites in yours. This is the distinction that separates Novel Mage's editing tools from generic AI rewriters: the output should sound like a better version of your draft, not like a different author stepped in.
Key benefits
- Three targeted operations: add depth, tighten pacing, or rephrase without losing intent
- Works on any selection a sentence, a paragraph, or a multi-page scene
- Preserves your Writer's Voice and system prompt context during edits
- No manual context setup required your chapter is already loaded
- Faster revision pass than manual rewriting for structural and stylistic issues
How it works
Select any passage in your chapter editor. The editing toolbar appears with Expand, Shorten, and Rewrite options. Choose the operation you need. Novel Mage sends the selection plus surrounding context to your configured AI and returns the result in a comparison view original on the left, edited on the right. Accept the edit, reject it, or trigger another variation. All edits are non-destructive: the original is always preserved in version history.
When to use it
Revision pass on a completed first draft tightening slow scenes with Shorten
Fleshing out skeleton scenes written during fast drafting with Expand
Reworking passages that beta readers flagged as unclear or flat with Rewrite
Improving dialogue rhythm or action clarity without changing the story beats
