Relationship Map

A visual graph of every character, place, and connection in your Codex, built from what you've already written.

The Relationship Map takes every character, location, and faction in your Codex and draws the connections between them as a graph rather than a list. Instead of clicking through a dozen individual entries to remember who's married to whom, who betrayed whom, and who reports to whom, you see the whole web at once.

It's built from the relationship fields you've already filled in on Codex entries, so there's no separate diagram to maintain by hand. Add a new relationship on a character's entry and it appears on the map automatically. For a novel with a large cast a fantasy epic, a multi-POV thriller, anything with more than a handful of named characters the map is often the fastest way to spot a gap: a character with no established connection to anyone, or two factions that should logically interact but never have an entry linking them.

The map is also a discovery tool, not just a reference one. Looking at the graph can surface a relationship that would deepen the story a rival who's never met the protagonist's mentor, say before you've written the scene where it matters.

Key benefits

  • Visualizes every character and location relationship in one view, not a dozen separate entries
  • Builds automatically from Codex relationship fields no separate diagram to maintain
  • Makes gaps in your world obvious: characters or factions with no established connections
  • Useful for planning a scene as well as for keeping track of what you've already established
  • Scales with cast size where a list gets unreadable past a dozen characters, the map stays legible

How it works

Open the Relationship Map from the Codex panel. Novel Mage renders every entry with a defined relationship as a node-and-edge graph. Click a node to see that character's or location's full Codex entry, or click an edge to see the relationship detail. Add or edit a relationship from any Codex entry and the map updates.

When to use it

1.

Planning a novel with a large ensemble cast fantasy, epic, multi-POV thriller

2.

Spotting characters or factions that have drifted out of the story's web of connections

3.

Onboarding yourself back into a complex world after time away from the manuscript

4.

Finding an unexplored relationship that could deepen a scene you're about to write
