Novel Mage Feature
Find & Replace
Search and replace names, facts, and terms across your novel.
Novel Mage's Find & Replace operates across your entire manuscript every chapter, scene, and note not just the current file you have open. For a 100,000-word novel spread across dozens of chapters, this is the difference between a five-minute fix and a two-hour manual hunt.
The most common use case is character or place name changes. You write 60,000 words with a protagonist named 'Daniel,' decide the name doesn't fit, and need to change every instance consistently including possessives ('Daniel's'), dialogue attributions ('Daniel said'), and compound uses ('Daniel and Marcus'). Novel Mage's Find & Replace handles all of these in a single pass with case-sensitive matching and optional whole-word filtering to avoid false matches in mid-word occurrences.
Beyond names, Find & Replace is essential for consistency passes. If you decide the magic system should use 'ether' instead of 'aether' throughout, or a location's name needs to change from 'The Iron Gate' to 'The Black Gate,' or a historical detail needs correcting across multiple chapters, a single search-replace command propagates the change everywhere. The operation logs every replacement so you can review the full list and undo selectively if needed.
Key benefits
- Manuscript-wide search across all chapters and scenes simultaneously
- Case-sensitive and whole-word matching options for precise replacements
- Handles possessives, compounds, and all variant forms of a term
- Change log shows every replacement review and undo selectively
- Saves hours on consistency passes during revision
How it works
Open Find & Replace from the manuscript toolbar or keyboard shortcut. Enter the search term and replacement. Choose matching options case sensitivity, whole word only, or regex for advanced patterns. Preview all matches across the manuscript before committing. Replace individually or all at once. Novel Mage generates a log of every change made for review. The operation is reversible per-replacement or as a full batch undo.
When to use it
Renaming characters, locations, or organizations globally after a revision decision
Standardizing terminology across a manuscript that uses inconsistent spellings or terms
Correcting a factual error that appears in multiple chapters
