Custom System Prompts
Create reusable system prompts for genres and tasks. Keep guidance consistent across chats, generation, and editing tools.
A system prompt is the persistent instruction that tells the AI how to behave before it processes any of your requests. In most AI tools, system prompts are fixed or hidden. In Novel Mage, you write and save your own reusable prompts that you can apply to any generation, chat session, or editing task.
This matters because genre and tone are not things you want to re-explain in every prompt. If you're writing a gritty noir thriller, your system prompt can enforce short punchy sentences, bleak atmosphere, and morally grey characters automatically, every time. If you switch to a fantasy epic, a different saved prompt applies the appropriate style. You build a library of prompts for your genres, characters, and tasks, and apply them with one click.
Custom system prompts also solve one of the most common AI writing frustrations: inconsistency. When your AI has the same core instruction set in every session, the output stays aligned with your established tone and world rules even if you're jumping between chapters or picking up a project after a break. Combined with Novel Mage's Writer's Voice feature and Codex system, system prompts form the third layer of AI context that keeps your novel sounding like itself.
Key benefits
- Write genre-specific instructions once, apply them to every AI interaction
- Eliminate the need to re-explain tone, style, and constraints in every prompt
- Create separate prompt profiles for different novels or POV characters
- Works across generation, chat, rewriting, and all other AI features
- Combine with Writer's Voice for a complete style control system
How it works
In the Novel Mage prompt library, create a named system prompt and write your instructions in plain text. You can specify tone, genre conventions, what to avoid, character naming rules, or anything else the AI should know. Save it with a descriptive label (e.g., 'Noir Thriller', 'Epic Fantasy Formal Register', 'YA Voice Casual Tone'). When starting a generation or chat session, select the prompt from your library and it becomes the AI's baseline context for that session.
When to use it
Writing across multiple genres and needing distinct AI behavior for each
Maintaining a consistent authorial tone across a series with multiple installments
Setting hard rules (e.g., 'never use adverbs', 'keep sentences under 20 words', 'maintain third-person limited POV') that apply across all AI output
Creating prompts for specific tasks like 'scene opener', 'dialogue only', or 'action sequence'
